What is Data Coding?
TRGs method for understanding your data
Every ticketing system is different; every organization manages their data in their own unique way, so to handle this, TRG developed Data Coding - a method through which users can categorize raw transaction data to make it usable for analysis and reporting. By assigning consistent labels to events, performances, or other data points, organizations can extract insights into sales performance, audience trends, and marketing effectiveness.
Why Coding Matters
Good coding transforms raw data into clear narratives. It supports strategic decisions by revealing which events generate the most revenue, where audience growth is happening, and which areas deserve more marketing focus. Without accurate coding, reporting becomes unreliable and insight is limited.
Two Approaches to Coding
There are two main ways to code data in our system: through the platform’s user interface (UI) or via file uploads.
The UI method is quick and straightforward. You select the items you want to update within the Events table, make changes directly in the system, and save. This approach is ideal for smaller, ad-hoc edits—like correcting a genre or categorizing a new event—and it provides immediate validation.
The file-based method involves downloading a spreadsheet, making edits in Excel, and uploading it back into the system. This is better suited to larger tasks, such as when a new season of events goes on sale and many entries need to be coded at once. Excel’s filtering and bulk editing tools make this process more efficient at scale.
