How to provide your MailChimp API Key

This article explains how to create and securely share your Mailchimp API key with TRG.

Why do this?  There are many reasons to share your Mailchimp data with TRG — maybe you're joining a trial or the solution you are using requires it. But only do this if you’ve been asked.

Overview:

You’ll:

  1. Login to your Mailchimp account

  2. Create an API key

  3. Share it with us securely

Never share your API key without a contract in place, and never send it by email.

Steps

Log in to Mailchimp

  • Click your pofile icon (top right), then click Profile.

Go to the API Keys Page

  • Click  'Extras' > 'API Keys'

Create a new key

  • Scroll down and click  "Create a Key

Name your key

You'll be prompted to add a description for the key. It doesn’t really matter what you call it — just pick something clear.

  • If future-you is cleaning up a bunch of keys, you’ll be grateful past-you didn’t name this one: “Really Important Integration”!

Important: When the API key appears, copy it immediately — this is the only time it will be displayed. If you do not copy it now, you will need to revoke this key and generate a new one.

Share the Key.

Never send your API key by email. If it falls into the wrong hands, a bad actor could access your data before you have the chance to revoke it.

TRG staff will always provide you with a secure method for sharing your API key. Do not share it through any other channel.

Recommended method: Save the key in a .txt or .docx file and upload it via the secure OneDrive link provided by your TRG contact.

  • That way, the key is encrypted in transit and stored safely — visible only to authorised staff.
