How AI will Affect the Workforce | TRG Arts

It's true, some roles will disappear.

We’ve seen in the previous Blog that AI can and will be tightly integrated with humans and other AI solutions. This means that certain functions and roles will become obsolete as AI will be able to do those functions faster, more efficiently, and with more accuracy. To stay competitive and be able to reduce spend on admin and increase spend on producing excellent art, all organizations look for ways to streamline processes. It’s been going on since business was, well, in business. All AI is doing is adding the rocket fuel.

One thing that is likely to become evident, especially amongst those organizations who adopt AI, is that they can do more with less. You won’t need to hire that scheduling assistant because you, as the scheduling manager, can pass that work on to an AI. You won’t need that marketing assistant to co-ordinate segmented, multi-channel campaigns – the AI will do that.

At some point, you won’t even need to spend ages writing copy. You will have mastered ‘prompt engineering’ to such an extent that you get exactly what you need. Whilst it’s also true that entire roles might disappear from your company, the reality is that elements of various job descriptions will be taken on by AI.

So, we won’t ALL be out of a job then?

We know that most cultural organizations don’t have enough resources to do all the things they want to do. Meaning it’s unlikely that we’ll see massive reductions in headcount. What we WILL see is the output of existing teams growing exponentially.

“Great!” – you might say. “My job is safe!” Yes, BUT only if you are able to competitively use AI. Think about that for a moment. When it comes to recruitment, the people who can squeeze the most out of AI are likely to become the top candidates ESPECIALLY when they have strong skills in other areas. In other words, there isn’t a future for employees who can’t at least engage with AI.

The new recruit is a curious being…

Aside from the fact that the recruitment process will become far less painful, i.e. no more reading hundreds of cover letters, CV’s and applications, the AI’s will surface the most appropriate top candidates. The new recruit will have AI competencies as a pre-requisite on top of their job specific roles. Their proven strength of using AI to power their work will become a hugely competitive asset.

What that means is:

  • data literacy
  • knowledge of machine learning concepts
  • ability to work seamlessly alongside AI

IN addition to this the new recruit will need skills in:

  • critical thinking
  • creativity
  • emotional intelligence

These skills will enable the new recruit to make an immediate impact in a fast moving and technologically advanced workspace. By prioritizing AI competencies alongside traditional skills, companies are preparing for a future where new hires are not only capable of navigating today's challenges but are also equipped to drive tomorrow's innovations. If you think the pace of change is fast now, get used to it…

Keeping on keeping up.

Another thing that we can be sure, especially in the foreseeable future, is that the pace of change is going to be relentless.

  • AI is doubling it’s power every six months.
  • This creates exponential change. Things we can’t even yet imagine today will be tomorrow’s reality.

The new recruit will need to be comfortable with this change. No, they will embrace it, they will actively bathe in it. And in doing so they will drive innovation in ways that have meaningful impact within your organization. Most people tried Chat GPT towards the end of 2023, but they don’t have the paid account which OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT) describe as being 10 times more advanced. If you don’t make the relatively low investment to have a paid account, how can you possibly know what is possible today?

How AI will manifest itself…

With all of that said, one of the things that we know is that companies around the world are learning how to introduce large language models into their platforms. Be that finance, ticketing, scheduling, email marketing, donations, SEO, segmentation and more. Some of those AI tools will be epic, others will be disappointing.

In a perfect world, you won’t even know that you are using AI. You’ll just say "wow, this is a really cool tool". Chat GPT and chatbots won’t necessarily be THE way you engage with AI long term, but large language models like Chat GPT will often be the underlying power of other apps.

Question, why should you pay attention to AI if it’s just going to be embedded in the platforms you already use? That’s a good question and something that will be dealt with in the next article, but know this:

  • The speed of change is going to change your world, and you’ll need to be able to sort through the noise to figure out what will work for you.
  • Companies will likely have higher expectations from you in your role. You will have to deliver more, and do it quickly and more cost effectively

In effect, you’ll need to keep keeping up.
